The end of an era -- RIP Hobart Smith

bwaffa Mar 05, 2013 12:27 PM

I just learned that Dr. Hobart Smith passed away quietly in his sleep yesterday morning at the age of 100. Considered by many as the godfather of modern Mexican herpetology, I'm sure he'll need no introduction here. The link below will take you to a nice summary of his career from just a few months ago.

I hope all is well, milkheads. It was a quiet year for me last season, and it stands to be another quiet season as I transition out of my final classroom semester and into my clinical rotations, which comprise the busiest and most challenging year of vet school. Learning a lot though and getting to see and write-up some pretty awesome herp cases. Thanks to all of you who have kept in touch, despite my aloofness. Cheers!

That is very sad to hear Brad. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. He was indeed extremely instrumental with his studies, research papers and numerous book publications regarding western herpetofauna especially. I also have a few books written by Hobart Smith.

RIP Hobart, and thank you for your countless contributions to the science and field aspect of herpetology..........

In the 60's, his "Snakes as Pets" was MESMERIZING for me. I'm sure lots of the guys here think so too. Lived to be 100; what a long a productive life -- he was blessed for sure!

Yep,...just so happens that's one of his books that I have too..

I wish I still had some of the other very old books I lost in a move many years ago...
