Metabolism: Garters vs. Pits

EricBodrero Apr 07, 2013 10:58 AM

Does anybody here have experience with both garters and pits that can chime in on metabolic rates? I keep pits and their metabolism is really high. It seems like everyday I was cleaning poop out of the cage. I know in general colubrids have a higher metabolic rate than, say, pythons or boas. How do garter snakes fare, in terms of a messy cage, feeding rates, etc. Thanks.

I kept pits when I was a kid. Would say that garters are have at least as high a metabolism and are much more active, but garters don't crap near the volume of a pit, maybe just as often, but garters are not nearly as much mess.

Thanks for the info. So I guess they also don't smell like pits, especially pine snakes? I love pits but boy do they stink. I'm thinking garters maybe not so much?

garters can eat and defecate everyday....depending on what you feed them....

and I'm no expert at all....so.....

....which leads back to fatty liver disease from feeding everyday???.....

......!
