Now how common is it for hatchlings sold at reptile stores to have MBD? Considering the monitors needs are nowhere close to being met.

Since most reptile stores sell imported babies, the answer is simple, healthy robust babies from the wild get mistreated right up to your door.
Then the bulk of them get placed in completely inappropriate housing and croak.
