ID help on a supposed Gopher...

charmer Apr 15, 2013 11:56 PM

Forgive the shed in the linked image under my signature, I just took this girl in from a friend as she came out of brumation, and haven't had time to dampen and remove it. I was told she is a gopher snake and was originally intended to be a part of our local High Desert museum display a long time back, but ended up with my old rancher friend for some reason. She is super friendly and I really can't use her or keep her, so after a phone call from a teacher recently... I was considering donating her to his middle school class as a class pet/educational tool, since she is so friendly. That is of course, after she feeds a couple times in my care, but I wanted to try and get the exact subspecies name right... too much misinformation in the world already. I had to look through a lot of photos to find one that looked close, as Gophers have a very different pattern than her, I was thinking she might be a striped phase Pacific Gopher- Pituophis Catenifer Catenifer? I don't work with Gophers or their morphs... anybody here know?

Thanks,
Stephanie Laumeyer

Your assumption is correct. It is a striped pacific gopher.
