After many unproductive warmer days, on this cool day I was surprised to find a mated pair of southeastern crowned snakes immediately followed by a scarlet snake. Later I went back to the same rock that had the scarlet snake and now there was a subadult racer. This is an isolated granitic habitat in western NC with species usually found along the coast (prickly pear etc).

That's awesome! Congrats! Cool post & pics. I knew there were Scarlets in FLA, but didn't know that they were native to your neck of the woods as well. Those Crowned snakes look like Ringnecks.

That's pretty cool.

Scarletsnakes are a tough snake to flip. I've seen hundreds, but only ever flipped one.
