Rosebuds...rose petals?

skeetdadpractica May 04, 2013 06:22 PM

Rosebud...more diet questions!

I have switched to curly leaf endive as the chuck staple food. They refuse to touch escarole, which is ok with me, since it is hard to find. Their next favorite, actually. It is their #1favorite are rose petals...should these be only an occasional Treat? they are listed as occasional in the "list". If I let them, that's all they'd eat...sort of like kids & Mac & cheese! Hibiscus is still devoured, but not like red rose petals! They come a runnin' for the roses!

Thanks for your input...

Jon

Hey Jon- they NEED variety in their diet. My current mix varies from batch to batch but usually I use an organic baby salad mix (without spinach)... chopped up... a handful or so of rose petals... some grated carrots .... yellow squash cut into small pieces/or grated.... a handful or two of grape leaves off the vines in our yard (rolled and cut thin)...and a handful or so of ground up GRASSLAND TORTISE DIET (it dries out the mixture alot and is full of fiber/grasses that helps to keep their stools solid). When dandelions are in season (right now in texas) I do my best to throw in a handful of flowers every few days.

My animals are kept outdoor in the natural sunlight year round so I rare supplement with any vitamins (I feel strongly that with a varied diet and natural sunlight, most animals don't need much vitamin/mineral supplementation).

Cheers,
Graham

After reading through some older posts, I'm going to add endive to the mix. Our hibiscius bush is just starting to leaf out for the year- we add the flowers and leaves to the mix when we have them.. there were no rose petals in this mix but usually I have some added in.

I'm still learning--- always trying to refine their diet- they eat the whole pile.

Thanks Graham...why is spinach not a great food? Too much iron?

I love your natural set-up...here in SoCal I think it's not warm enough.
