Accidental eggs.

BobS May 23, 2013 02:36 AM

I recently had this young SHB in with a male to get used to each other prior to keeping them on display in a nice 3' Vision cage that I freed up since I downsized and made the difficult decision to keep less Kings. They are two years old so I felt they would be past the overly aggressive phase of feeding frenzy hatchlings. I did not cool them and the male did not go off feed so I wasn't thinking this was a concern. Lord willing, she will do ok with some small meals soon and the eggs look like they might even be viable. I'm amazed at how large they are in comparison to her size. Trying not to stress her by peeking in too much. I was away for a week and just checked on her and saw her all swollen and put in a lay box. Kind of shocked. I hadn't planned to breed for another year or two.

My bulls bred at two years of age, too. I was really surprised as well! Thought they would have to be older, but never underestimate teenagers! LOL!

Rozy came from this first small clutch of 5.

Your little mama looks like she has laid a nice healthy clutch! Congratulations! Be sure and feed her up and she will recover nicely.

Congrats Bob! How big is the female?

Thanks. A tad over three feet.
As I said. I had planned to wait till she was bigger. Didn't think anything this little could go. As long as she recovers ok, I've learned something.

Snakes out in the wild breed when they are sexually mature, albeit producing smaller first clutches than when they are older and bigger. I think as long as she has been getting a good diet and is free of parasites she should recover just fine. Not to argue for early breeding; it is better to have the female be bigger and older.

How is she now? How many eggs did she lay?
