This is a Pacific Gopher Snake, found near Corvallis, Oregon. Gender unknown, it is eating F/T fuzzy mice every 4 or 5 days. It is my first pit.

Nice! It looks a lot like my little gopher Zero, from Cave Junction, Oregon.

I wasn't really planning on getting a gopher snake, but "he" was so cute I decided to keep him. He is still very wild, but hopefully with handling he will calm down. He never refuses a meal!

I will get a friend of mine who is proficient at probing snakes to sex him for me later this summer.

Mine never refuses a meal, either, unless she is in blue. She is very handy for feeding food the others have decided to not eat. I am going to have my friend who is good at sexing to confirm the gender issue. I think mine is a female because from experience the females always seem to be the more enthusiastic eaters.

Gonzo, my big girl, who almost never refuses a meal! LOL!

Can you over-feed pits? I have been feeding "her" a fuzzy mouse every 4-5 days.

I've had them burp up some of the mice if I feed them too much at a setting. If they get too ravenous they tend to overeat if they can. Small frequent feedings with youngsters works good, though.

Thanks! Its funny, I was never really interested in them, but he is very different from corns, alternas and rubber boas. Very muscular, and of course the skin feels very different.

Nice, I caught one in NorCal that looks similar to yours that I decided to keep.

How long did yours take to calm down? This one is very fast, and unless I hold on tight ends up on the floor every time I take him out!

It's a pretty tame snake. I don't mess with my wild-caughts all that much, but I find Rat Snakes, Bulls, and Gophers sometimes are OK with being handled and sometimes are "squirmy" and even defense.
