Help me identify this petstore pyro!

wohlerswi Jun 06, 2013 01:00 PM

Hey Guys,
I picked this pyro up at the local petshop on sale. I have a nice female baubel pyro, and I just couldnt pass this animal up. I got it for $40 on the sale. Anway, I am trying to figure out what kind of pyro it is. I dont want to cross it with my baubel if it isnt the same kind of pyro, I really dont want to make hybrids. Anyway let me know what you think. thanks
Will

It looks like a CROSS to me. If that is the case, don't even think about breeding it.

Hate to say it, but it does look like a hybrid of some sort....which in unfortunate.

Ask the pet shop for the source of the snake and see what you can find out.

If it is a hybrid, I wouldn't breed it or allow for it to pass any genetics

I would never intentionally hybridize an animal. That is the entire reason I am asking opinions on what it is. Im a research biology major and that would be very irresponsible of me to do.

On the other hand, it would be completely speculation as to what it is no matter what, even if you guys thought it was a pure subspecies of pyro. One could easily argue the fact that it shouldnt be bred in either case unless it can be proven to be a line bred pyro something similar to a baubel.

The genetics cant be traced back. The petstore took the animal in on trade, and it originally came from an unknown vendor at a reptile show. I have already tried my best to track that info down.

Also what makes you guys lean towards hybrid? He pretty much has the same scale count as my baubel, just a bit different on the color scheme. Thanks for the input

The head looks like a Cali. to me. Stunning colors.

What makes me believe this is a hybrid is the fact that I've never seen anything like this in any pure pyro line in the last 30 plus years. It looks like an alterna cross to me....

I am 100% percent sure that's a hybrid. The white is too wide, the shape of the red is "wrong" and the head pattern is waaayyy off, looking more like a thayeri or alterna. The mix could contain pyro, mex mex, thayeri, greeri and/or alterna. Maybe more...

But it is an exceptionally pretty snake and personally I see nothing wrong with breeding it as long as you label the offspring as hybrids.
