Help needed identifying Bull sub-species

Slayer_Scotty Jun 13, 2013 10:03 PM

I caught this bull snake (female?) in Denver, Colorado. I can't seem to figure out if she's a pituophis catenifer sayi OR a pituophis c. affinis (Sonoran) or some type of hypo. What specific type of snake is this? She's awesome & sort of a wonder snake, in the way she is so friendly & tame! Thanks a lot for any feedback.

I am not sure about this , maybe others can help out , but I think CO has some pretty strict laws on catching native herps. Might want to look into that one. You might be good to go, not sure though. pretty snake for sure and I am not sure about the answer to your question either but just giving a heads up.

They are legal to keep here. I also just now talked to a guy who works at a reptile store here in Colorado, while I was purchasing a rat. He said that they are illegal to sell, NOT illegal to keep or own. Here is a link explaining the law-

Thanks to the two of you who replied that the Bull is a pituophis catenifer sayi specific species. I suspected this but had some doubt about it, because when doing google image searches of this & the Sonoran gopher some pics looked just like Iggy.
Thanks again for your help in clearing this up!

Looks like a nice "Sayi" to me. Not sure about any state restrictions Joe mentioned...don't think they'll send a swat team to the door or anything though. ( )

Bull Snake, as in Pituophis catenifer sayi.

Cool. I just was not sure and did not want to see you get in trouble by posting it if it was a no no.. Glad you can keep it .. Awesome snake. I remember catching a few about twenty years ago in the boulder area while field herping and how pretty they were. I was going to move to CO this year and remember talking with the wildlife division about the herp laws to see what in my collection I could bring with me. Turned out NOT MUCH!!! The laws are pretty strange and hard (at least for me) to understand. Anyway, we ended up in KS and I kept all my critters!! Peace.
