Humidity Problems

zippybomb Jun 23, 2013 07:54 PM

Hi guys, I was just if you could give me any tips for keeping humidity up in my mangrove's terrarium as i've been having some problems. The humidity seems to escape within half an hour after a mist. I use the largest or second largest exo terra terrarium there is, it's about three feet long and he's just over a year old. I mist his(or her, I don't actually know) enclosure 6 or 7 times times a day but it still doesn't stay constantly humid. Although it does have a screen top, I've taped up the entire thing except for where the heat lamp comes in. Another problem is the soil. It's very dry and I can't seem to get it hydrated again except for the surface. Although I put in a bunch of bark that he uses to support his tunnels, it would if he didn't need them and could just tunnel where he wanted. Again, any tips would be appreciated, thanks very much!

Sounds like a mess, maybe get a cage better suited for monitors. Best wishes

Tahnks, i'm going to be upgrading him to a big enclosure when I get back from summer, so hopefully that'll help.

Start by covering the top screen with a thick plastic or even a wood piece.

monitor keeping rule number 1: NO VENTILATION OPENINGS.

I can see you are raw when it comes to monitor keeping.

I could write a lot of things but I'll start telling you to read this:
http://www.amazon.com/Savannah-Monitor-Lizard-exanthematicus-ebook/dp/B007SF988K/ref=tmm_kin_title_0

And it doesn't matter it's about exanthematicus. They are all pretty much the same.

After you read this, you can start learning.

PS: you chose a difficult and shy species by the way. You'll need lots of patience and HANDS OFF the animal.
