Black gap/River Rd

Hello all,

Im planning a trip to Alpine this coming weekend for some west Texas herping. I went to snake days and decided I needed to check out the area a bit more.

I was planning on river rd/christmas mtn. the first night and black gap the second. While planning my trip I noticed some mention of an additional permit required to hunt on FM2627. I contacted TPWD and they replied that reptile hunting is completely banned in Black Gap area. After weighing that against the dozens of testimonials about road hunting Black Gap I'm starting to think that maybe hunting in the actual wildlife area called Black Gap may be banned but that FM2627 would be a state road and NOT considered part of Black Gap thus not requiring an additional permit.

I realize its late in the season but I'm still holding out hope on finding some great snakes so if anyone could offer some good advice on the legalities of road hunting on FM2627 as well as River Rd I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

The road is perfectly legal, as well so many feet off the roadway. This is known as the set back, you can contact txdot for the exact set back, it's probably about 120 feet
