Unhatched egg is bicephalic

Denbar Jul 27, 2013 05:15 PM

I opened the last egg of 4 clutches and found a rather ugly dead corn. In addition to being bicephalic it had a pretty serious kink not far behind the heads and the bottom jaw was way out of place. There were no other deformities out of any other hatchlings.

that's a cool one....it has 3 eyes....usually mine would have 4......and yes...be dead also....not sure how many I actually have in the freezer....I really need to clean it out....soon....!

....these things just happen.....good luck in the future with a live one...!!!!

Dennis,

I don't think I've ever seen one where the two heads are sharing an eye. It's would be interesting to know how that sort of thing happens, especially since the rest of the clutch was normal.

Cool pic!

Yeah, crazy stuff happens once in a while. Lethal gene codes are just part of the game. A few years back I had a severely deformed amel Honduran that had two connecting heads/faces and shared one incomplete brain case. Pretty morbid stuff.......

What amazes me is that they seem to survive all the way to the point of hatching, or rather not hatching.

Yeah, .....sometimes they do anyway. I've had some that were all connected/folded with their internal organs all exposed ans very much alive and alert flicking their tongues but not being able to go anywhere. It can be sad to see sometimes. Those of course are humanely euthanized.
