Feeding mussies? Canada breeders?

poison1981 Jul 28, 2013 05:12 PM

Just curious is it cruel to feed mussies mice only? was told it is wrong to feed a king cobra rats only that their health is not so well. I wonder and assume the same for a mussie?

Also who in ontario/canada keeps/breeds sells these pretty snakes? I did not see them at the last expo in toronto. Or maybe we did not look hard.

I'm no expert but my female has been on mice only about 2 years now since the day I purchased her. She came to me with nose rub, scale rot, and some breathing issues. She is now almost 5 feet long and is simply gorgeous. All health issues have been quelshed, and she is the epitome of a perfect mussy now. Not a flaw on her anymore. I almost sold her a few months back, but I'm glad I held onto her now.

The very existence of flamethrowers means that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves..."You know, I really want to set those people over there on fire...but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

captive five foot mussie i see are thin but the wild caught are massive with a thick girth like a indigo snake I wonder if it is from proper diet. King snakes fed rats start to whither also.

Naturallly in the wild the mussie is a girthy snake.

Here is an average size one https://gallery.kingsnake.com/data/76098big_mussurana.JPG but a big one is very girthy from the pictures I see of herps going to SA and catching them.

Every captive one i see is like a rat snake.

Looks pretty normal for it's size from what I have seen. That is a big one for sure though, and isn't a five footer by far. Cant really compare the two against each other just like a 7 foot indigo will out girth a 5 footer the same way.

And fyi, Clelia talk supposed to go here:

Yeah I have two easterns and one muss

Haven't done any pics in a while with them really and have never done a video. They don't like to sit still long enough for cameras ha! And no I don't do any live feedings.

how long are all ur snakes? i want to see theM?

I think a indigo may run into trouble with a big king snake, kings tie knots around other snakes and make it impossible for the other snake to get free of them.

How much did you pay? I wanted both species for public display at the reptile show my friend thows every week.

I dont think feeding mussies only rodents has any ill effects, i had them for a couple of years & they did great on mice, very solid muscular snakes & beautiful glossy irridesent sheen. Really cool snakes.

Up against an Indigo size for size mussie would probably win out because of the venom, having said that it depends who grabs who first. The feeding response of drymarchon is incredible & the speed they can take down prey is awesome so if an indigo or cribo latched onto a mussies head i think it would be bye bye mussie.
Even with constriction, i have seen Dry`s eating constrictors & they just keep swallowing it down.

Luck of the draw on the day i guess.

The only other snakes i have kept that have a feeding response like Dry`s are False water cobras. They are awesome too.

yeah but those constrictors are just rat snakes not as strong a mussie and rat snakes are not snake killers

snakes like king snakes wont wrap around the body of an indigo as they go down being chomped away they will wrap around the indigos head and lungs and can kill it in the process

the way a rainbow boa will kill another snake trying to eat it
