Speckled Black Pine

metalpest Jul 28, 2013 06:40 PM

Just hatched 8 babies from my black pine clutch, and realized this one looked very different: she has random white scales. Haven't seen any babies like this in previous breedings of these animals either. Anybody seen one like this? Can't wait to see after she sheds.

I've had bull snakes hatch out with that same thing. I'm not 100% sure what causes it, but it sheds out after their first shed every time. Hopefully it holds for you.

nick, looks like you have a 'buttermilk' pine there. lol! maybe it has the pied gene? i'd be very interested to hear if that trait does shed out. good luck.....

I don't think it is the same as the pied gene, if you look at them they have large white blotches, this one has white scales but between the scales is not white like the pieds. As soon as I saw her I looked up pics of pieds thinking the same thing.

Any updates??? Did this one shed???

metalpest Aug 01, 2013 10:55 PM

Clutch is blue right now...update to follow. She seems like the fattest of the clutch, still full of yolk.

This snake has passed while in shed, along with another clutchmate. They were both very thick with yolk still, while the other sibs have toned down and one has shed now. I've had a baby die in the incubator before I took it out less than 24 hours after hatching, but I have never lost any babies during the first shed cycle. Something must have gone wrong with these two in development. We will see how the rest of the clutch does after shedding and food offered.

That's a bummer. Sorry to hear that.

Sorry to hear that. That is odd.

what a bummer Nick. That really blows. Did they pip by themselves or were the eggs cut.

I did not cut any or help any out. Once they were all out I took them out of the incubator and housed them individually. This one and one other failed to shed and passed.
