best cage for a breeder pair of BRBs?

Vampireiguana Jul 30, 2013 03:50 PM

I have a pair of unrelated adult BRBs that I want to breed in the spring. I previously asked whether to house them separately and based on the advice I have the pair set up in 2 cages.

My question is: what is the best cage to have set up, both during breeding and then for the female during gestation?

I am currently considering a 2 x 6 x 1.5 ft glass terrarium. I was thinking this size would give me enough room to position hides, breeding box etc. Is there anything specific I need to do in terms of set up or cage size?

I'm a first time breeder so any advice would be appreciated!

Can't go wrong with a boaphile cage. A 321D would be great, even better would be a 322D or 422D.

Thanks! I had a look and the Boaphile enclosures seem to be excellent.

thanks guys! One more question: How do you maintain the humidity? I currently use a Reptifogger but I don't know how it would work with a Boaphile cage.
Thanks for all your advice!

The beauty of a boaphile cage is it already has limited ventilation which is my number one recommendation to maintain humidity. The only ventilation is the gap around the door.

That with a nice substrate, a damp moss hide box and large water dish should work great!!

Good luck with maintaining humidity with boaphile cages. I'm not sure why some people love these cages so much. Animal Plastics are far superior if you ask me and they hold humidity MUCH better!!! not to mention their customer service is FAR superior!

Curious why you think Animal Plastics cages would hold humidity MUCH better. Both are plastic box style cages, Once the AP cage is assembled and sealed it's pretty much the same as Boaphile with the only difference being the door. Neither cage has additional venting.

I do admit I like Animal Plastics sliding bypass doors but I believe they will have similar venting properties to the Boaphile drop front door. In my snake room though it makes little difference as the whole room is humid.

I have purchased racks and cages from Boaphile and I have also purchased Racks from Animal Plastics. Both Jeff and Ali have given me top notch service. Both have large backlogs of orders and take a couple of months plus to receive your order.

Thanks for the tip about the humidifier, I'll definitely investigate!
the Zoomed reptifogger I use is pretty good, but it's limited in terms of water bottle capacity. I use a hygrotherm with it, and the fogger does seem to struggle a little maintaining the relatively high humidity needed for my BRBs. I have also heard that the fans break easily, and though its too early to tell, the fans are starting to whir loudly.
I will keep the current ones clean, but I think moving forward I'll stick with maintaining humidity via substrate, water bowl evaporation and enclosure ventilation. (all recommended by those kind enough to share their experience!)
Many thanks!
