snake blamed for deaths

I doubt it was the snake but this will not help us as snake keepers:

Always remember to secure you cages...
I think carbon monoxide was the culprit, but you can't blame the snake if he is in a cage.

Life is full of uncertainties and hazards, not that it makes the loss of life any easier but it doesn't mean that sheriffs need to go around making laws for everyone else to abide by. Again... there are laws already in place...child welfare laws. If you put your kid in the line of danger or are negligent there are already avenues in place to deal with people like this. The only problem is that it is under used and precedents are not set. thus there is no perceived sense of enforcability and idiots that need legal incentive to act responsibly fear not the rule of the laws that already exist.
What follows are more senseless and fragmented laws limiting freedoms and liberties when infact, laws already in place to deal with such circumstances also protect those same freedoms and liberties.

Snake deaths now a murder investigation
Two Canadian boys killed by a python could now be a homicide

Investigations into two young Canadian brothers thought to be strangled by a python has taken a twist, with police now treating it as a possible murder.
Connor Barthe, 7, and brother Noah, 5, were killed while they slept in an apartment above an exotic pet store, but there were no screams.
It comes after the mother of the pair posted hundreds of photos of her boys taken last year, playing in and cleaning her neighbours snake cage.
Police have stepped up their inquiries, but won’t release further details until full post mortem results are known.
Snake experts have also raised questions stating pythons seeking food always bite first.

John Marais from the African Snake Bite Institute said “if it grabs a kid, you’re going to have more than enough time to scream”.
“You can’t be asleep and be bitten by a python and strangled. That’s impossible,” Mr Marais told News Limited. “You’re going to wake up instantly.”
It’s believed the non-poisonous rock python escaped its enclosure and got into the ventilation system, before slithering into the apartment where the boys were sleeping.

I knew something about this did not smell right, the snake's MO was off, everything was off.

I feel bad for the innocent children and their family.

If it is confirmed that the snake's owner did it, the same should be done to him as was done to the snake.

“UPDATE: Shocking pictures show Canadian boys cleaning reptile cage before python strangled them in their sleep
Noah Barthe, 4, and his 6-year-old brother, Connor Barthe, were killed in their sleep by the African rock python after it escaped from an enclosure inside their friend's apartment. The killer serpent was euthanized Tuesday.”

--------------------------------------------------

I am not sure what the publishers intent of this headline was,
but what I actually found *shocking* about this article was
that any adult with half a brain would actually photograph any children so
scantily clad, in this day and age, and not expect some to see it as a HUGE red flag. Lets see, first the snake escapes from faulty cage a SECOND time, AFTER the owner FAILED to repair it, and this time with small children present, then the owner changes his story from the “snake escaped from the downstairs cage” to “snake actually was kept in a different cage in the upstairs apartment all along”. Now we see that no attending adults had the brains to not allow small children to play naked in a dirty reptile cage and expose themselves to whatever microorganisms the snake may have had. And now we find out about photos that would be provocative to pedophiles. It seems like the children were failed at least three times by all of the responsible adults in their lives.
And because of this, responsible reptile owners are having collections confiscated and euthanized, and cities everywhere are passing restrictive exotics laws fueled by media-manufactured hysteria of escaped snakes “terrorizing” the world. The witch hunt has begun.
When people kill people with guns, or other weapons, drunk driving, dogs, etc, we don't pass laws making it illegal for responsible people who haven’t done anything wrong, to own guns, weapons, cars, alco

http://globalnews.ca/news/796203/updated-police-determining-potential-charges-after-deadly-python-attack

HALIFAX – Legal documents obtained by Global News show police are trying to determine if they can charge the owner of Reptile Ocean with criminal negligence causing death after his python escaped and killed two young boys.
Connor and Noah Barthe were found dead in Jean-Claude Savoie’s apartment, located above his former reptile zoo in Campbellton, N.B. on Aug. 5. They had been asphyxiated by Savoie’s African rock python, which had broken free from its enclosure while they slept.
The 24 pages of documents, written mostly in French, also reveal one of the Barthe brothers was found with blood on his head following the deadly attack. Their bodies were both found lying on a mattress.
According to the timeline given by police, officers arrived at Reptile Ocean early in the morning and found Savoie outside the apartment next to an ambulance with blood on his hands and shorts.

As per this article:
"A third child, Savoie’s son, was still in the apartment along with the python. Savoie told police when he tried to remove the snake himself it had been very aggressive toward him, which was not its normal behaviour. He said he lost track of the snake when he left the apartment."

Soooooooo, he found the snake had killed 2 boys and then left his son inside with the snake?
In previous articles the snake had been described as "vicious" by him and some other guy who worked there but now that is "not its normal behavior?"

This guy is a piece of work. Something still doesn't smell right here.
