Wow right outside the window! Very cool. Looks like the little guy has had a rough go of it? Is there a lot of cats running around or is it just the normal life of a chuck?

regalringneck Aug 19, 2013 11:41 AM

... gladja liked it, & yes he is a lil roughed up (kinda like me) not too bad tho., but no theres no cats around here, the coyotes will gobble them up, ... so no cats = songbirds, small mammals & lizards can live :} whooda guessed; coyotes are important to lizard & other small wildlife persistence @ the urban interface.
He's got 2 lady chucks around & ive been building em boulder piles & laying out alfalfa hay, just hoping to get them to bury some eggs this year

Heres a look at my old chuck/herp enclosure @ my last house : }

I know this screen name. Are you on the AHA forum and field observation forum too? This really is good stuff. I am very familiar with the neighborhoods on the south side of the Salt River Mountains. I cannot believe how these guys flourish in an urban environment. Really didn't figure on the coyotes but makes sense. They are just amazing animals-always been my favorite. Thanks for taking the time to post this stuff. It is really appreciated. Anytime you get bored just stop and post. LOL. I was actually pretty good friends with the late Jerry Feldner and he pretty much showed me a bunch of really cool spots. This was years ago though so I imagine it has built up even more. Do they seem to be holding their own in the sprawl?

Thanks again

g, morn'n, yeah ive been around this site since ~ 96, like most, got tired of the admin's heavyhanded censorship, tho these specialty forums have been somewhat spared ... oh well what should one expect from modern texas; freedom of expression .. ha
I am impressed w/ the behavioral plasticity im observing in these chucks regarding tolerance to urbanization, but the adult males i note take a beating on these local roads in the spring, when theyre bobbing & needing to fyte one another. Pity peeple will not see/avoid small critters on the road ...hopefully if i build my locals enough hiding places & feed them, they wont fall for victim to wanderlust ?
Fd a gophersnake at the front door last night ... ate a f/t quail before leaving... whhooohoo :}

you are a lucky guy! Keep us updated on your little project. I pretty much gave up on the carrot tails just because every fall when i put my adds up for cb babies I get a ton of hate mail! LOL. I'm a land raper, breaking the law etc. so now I just stick with my red backs and don't mention locales.

... rogerthat & another very cool looking morph are the yellowtales from down around casa grande :}

I spent a week with a friend down on the opposite side of the interstate from Picacho Peak and we saw tons of them. I also heard they are on South Mountain but I have never confirmed that. Actually Jerry Feldner was the one that told me that. Hopefully not as it would probably be a release. My favorites are the red backs from the south central area of your state. Man some locales have some beauties! Been keeping chucks for over 20 years and I still think the red backs are the best but of course that is just opinion. LOL. Thanks again for your post.
