Current Consensus on Gene Compatibility

scaledverts Aug 23, 2013 12:35 PM

Hello,

I was digging around on the forums looking for some information regarding the two lines of axanthic and stumbled upon some interesting discussions regarding the compatibility of the two (possibly three now) hypo lines. What is the current consensus among everyone as to the compatibility of the two hypos. Furthermore, what about the two lines of anery are they the same gene just from different locales?

I don't want to start an argument or anything I'm just curious what we currently know about the different genes.

Thanks,

Kyle

Maybe Jason will comment more on the axanthic lines.

They hypo lines.....we will have to wait and see. Jermey Price hatched some animals he suspects might have both hypo genes in them. It will take some proving out to be sure. I still warn that they lines are not compatible until we see more evidence. I bred stillwater to trumbower and got all normals.

If you're referring to the animals you produced last year, they are actually triple hets,(Stillwater/Trumbower/Patternless) 50% poss.het. albino/axanthic/white sided...they just look normal.

the Axanthic lines are not compatiable. I breed a Patternless Axanthic to 2 female Triple hets (Albino, Axanthic and whitesided) this year. 28 offspring and no Axanthics

I produced the the triples myself. I bred a Miami Co Axanthic to a Albino Whitesided. I bought the Axanthic Pattternless from Josh Martin. I beleive the Gary B Axanthic

Hmm Jason,

That's interesting. I wonder if that means that it is a) a mutation of the same gene just different mutations and therefore not compatible or b) different gene mutations that could result in a double homozygous axanthic. It is kind of interesting that this situation occurs in both the hypo and axanthic mutations.

meaning the hypo lines are incompatible. if they were, i would have had hypos.

But Jason's input on the axanthic issue, raises a good point in the hypo discussion...is there enough of a visual distinction between the two strains of axanthic bulls to make combining them a worthwhile endeavor? I don't have enough experience with either form to say one way or the other.but I rarely see any distinction made by people offering axanthic gene carriers for sale, which I find rather puzzling.(?) In regards to the two forms of hypo we are discussing though,I would be willing to bet that either of us could tell Stillwater hypos from Trumbower hypos if,say half a dozen of each were placed side by side...this hypothetical scenario, combined with the fact that the two mutations occur on different alleles,is why I believe both morphs can be expressed simultaneously in one individual resulting in a different phenotype. I hope to see some updates from Jeremy Pierce as his animals mature,I'm very curious to see how they turn out!
