I have a striped corn question

markg Aug 30, 2013 06:23 PM

With the recent pics of striped corns fresh on the board, here are some questions:

Did cornsnake striping come from a wild-caught individual?
(What I mean is, is there a locality where striped corns have been found in the wild, or did some normally-patterned corns in captivity throw a striped baby?)

When did striped corns hit the hobby? After amel?

I'm one of the stripe producers this year, but I don't know the answers to either question. Hopefully someone else will answer.

The first known striped corns were hatched in Europe in the mid 1980s from blotched parents. Some of these (and their parents) were later imported into the United States. As far as I know, a striped Corn Snake has not been found in the wild, though there are wild striped Gopher Snakes and other types of typically blotched snakes that occassionally are found with striped patterns.

Amel corns were being bred in the 1960s and became available to serious collectors in the 1970s. So they were in the hobby a decade or so prior to striped Corn Snakes.
