Breeding Loan Interest

ccphoto Sep 25, 2013 12:38 PM

Hi All,
So I realize this isn't something often posted on here, but I wanted to know if anyone has any interest in doing a breeding loan?

I've done them before and have a couple planned still coming up, but I'm looking into finding a mate for my female BRB. She has never been bred and is approaching 3,000 grams (about 6.5 lbs). I have some male BRBs, but the closest to breeding is still a year or two away. I'd be up for breeding her to a normal male, but would be more interested if anyone wants to produce some hets (hypo, anery, etc.)

I don't have a lot of background info on her other than knowing that she was given to a friend of mine by a soldier called back to duty. She was kept as a pet and I believe is 6 y/o. As far as I know, she is a normal (but has the possibility of being more - she almost looks browned out like an adult anery). I say possibility of being more because the guy was also keeping a ($2,000 ) Amazon Basin Emerald as a pet.

Breeding loans can be tricky and are best if you can meet in person to exchange breeder and eventually babies as well. I have done several and most have gone just fine. Some did not result in babies though. I suggest putting together a contract with everything you can think of in it including EXACTLY how the babies are to be split. If at the end you both want to do it differently than the contract you can but you always have it to fall back on.

Most people do breeding loans to work with special genes, typically from both parties.

Thanks for the input Dave!

I have a breeding loan contract that covers pretty much anything you can think of, including illness, baby split, unexpected morphs, unexpected death, etc. I know it can be a tricky thing to work out, especially when shipping is involved.

I wish I had a morph BRB to work with, but the big girl is the only one I've got at breeding size/age. Knowing that it'll be another 2 years (most likely) before I can breed her to one of my males I figure why let her sit when she definitely has the size to her to produce a nice litter.

I would think if you really want someone to risk their morph male, any breeding loan would probably be you sending your female to them. This way they have little to lose since their animal would be worth more, and they'd have full control over everything. With that said, most morph owners plan pairings accordingly ahead of time, so I doubt it would be worth their risking their investment. I've done a few breeding loans where I sent animals to others that ended in disaster. I swore never to do one again. Introduction of disease is a very real worry. It's just not worth the risk IMO.

Every breeding loan I have done was beneficial to both parties involved. Either adding new morph genes or adding high color genetics to something. Unless there was some new genetics or crazy color, I would not be willing to take the risk.

I think your best bet would be to either wait for your male(s) to mature or purchase an adult male.

Yeah, I'm looking into possibly buying a new male... there is a local expo here this weekend. I just wanted to put a feeler out to see if any interest came about.

In the end, I've been considering trying to buy one of the potential "chocolate" line males from Outback to breed.

It's sad that breeding loans have cause people to lose pets and breeding animals. I always make sure never to loan out a sick organism or even a possibly carrier. One of the breeding loans I had set-up, where I was sending a calico black rat snake to create some first-ever morphs was canceled when I learned the animal was possibly sick from being infected unknowingly at the original owner's place.

It's always going to be a risk, but worth it sometimes imo. I know I would be the one loaning out the animal most likely, especially with a high end cross but to me it may justify the potential risks in the end. I do see your point though of it not being justifiable on the other end though, but a chance for someone with a "pet" male to get breeding in. I'm working out a loan of a DRMB that is someone's pet to come and breed my haitian (both C. striatus).

Most rainbow females only breed every other year. They're not like ball pythons that will go consistently. If you loan her out this year and only get half the offspring that might not be as lucrative as waiting until your males are ready next year and having all the babies. What if she doesn't go when you have males that are?

ccphoto Sep 29, 2013 01:09 PM

I completely understand. My oldest male is still 1-2 years away... and I'm leaning more towards 2 years away. Not being a breeder mainly, I'd have no issues if she didn't go again next year or even the year after. The female was a random pickup, as I have a few females I'm raising up in plans to put them to the males I have.

This female just happened to come up as a rescue for really cheap from a friend.

Thanks Cliff. I know all about different diseases all too well.

I've had animals come in with just about everything, losing pets to mites, r.i. (secondary from mites), tumors, and even incurable stuff (I think particularly of a pair of ratsnakes I had (one a calico).

Quarantine has become a major precursor and I've also learned well to recognize symptoms for most issues.

Very bad idea to loan, I had an adult Russo White Diamond male BP that I loaned to a buddy a year ago as a "breeder loan" situation. The python came back with an RI and after six months of treatments and hell, I found it tits up one morning last spring. Do I blame my buddy, nope, I should have known better! It's 100% my fault for considering it in the first place. $$ got in the way of common sense! Nothing in or out of my collection without intense scrutiny. Jeff

ccphoto Sep 29, 2013 01:15 PM

That sucks Jeff. Always bad losing an animal.

I've done loans before and am aware of all possible issues. I was just seeing if anyone had any interest in a BRB loan. Some of the species (not BRBs) are so few and far between loans are necessary to keep them going in the hobby - Chilabothrus, Ungaliophis, Tropidophis.

Chris, are you still looking for a male? I am considering loaning some of my snakes. Here is my adult male.
