Feeding Pine Snake

Godfrey Oct 05, 2013 08:33 AM

I have recently acquired a 2013 ruthveni. I received it last Tuesday. I have had pine snakes before and had no problems with them for the most part. This one has refused two offerings of fresh killed mouse fuzzies. I know it was eating rats for the breeder who produced it. I also know they are more timid than corns which I have lots of. Is it uncommon for a pine snake to require more time to settle in to its new environment, or could it be that the issue is its preference for rats over mice? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you received this snake this past Tuesday, IMO, it may need some more time, other than 3 days, to get settled, and want to start eating. Your new cage for the snake may be completely different than what it was kept in before, and time would be of the essence for it to start feeling secure, and to get used to its' new surroundings. What are the temps? In my experience, pines do better on slightly cooler temps, than say kings and other colubrids. Is there a good hide for the snake? Make sure that it has a good hide, and leave the snake alone for the first week or two, other than offering it meals.

Assuming your husbandry is correct for the snake I would be more inclined to suspect a rat preference.

You are correct sir, HappyHeathen. Rats it is. I hope I can convert her one day. I only raise mice. That could change, though. Thanks for the replies. Sorry I replied so late.
