A Couple of Southern Illinois Rat Snakes

tspuckler Oct 06, 2013 07:06 AM

I found these yesterday. I did not see a Rat Snake on my 2012 visit to this area and I've never found a baby Rat Snake, so I was pretty stoked about this.

And finding an adult a few minutes later wasn't too shabby either.

Here's a close-up of the adult.

Really nice! Black rats I'm guessing, don't think grays go that far north. A co-worker and friend of mine found one crossing a highway in the middle to Atlanta Georgia about 5ft. He figures it came on the bottom of a vehicle because of where it was. Any how, really nice rat snakes, always love seeing wild ones. Zoo and pet store specimens usually just sit there, wild ones are much more entertaining.
