Pricing insanity. Some solutions.

TheTruth Dec 03, 2013 04:38 PM

Unless you have been living under a rock you know what I'm talking about. We have not seen price crashes like these since the Mojave. That doesn't really count since it was done on purpose. What can we all do? Here is a few of my thoughts.

Let's start with your new morph pricing. You've proved out your squiggly pattern with a hint of peach coloring. You've picked out your fancy name and you're ready to sell it. You make sure you go to all the forums to show off your squiggy peach(name). Now you're ready to sell. Since it's yours you think it's worth millions. You want top dollar and a couple people whose favorite color is peach might buy it. You're happier than a cockroach at McDonalds. You just made tens of thousands from a 10 dollar normal dinker. Now you're a player. Or are you?

You decide to sell a few more so you can get that new fancy car. Where are your buyers? The first couple sold so easy. Now you're posting and posting trying to sell the next one and nothing. People see this. People see you can't sell squiggy peach. You decide to drop the price a few dollars. You got 15k for the first two males. You're not gonna complain with another 12k. People see this also. Your first buyers see this and begin to worry so they call you. If you're smart you realize you're heading down hill fast. Most of you are not though. You decide you can do what you want, it's your morph. Now the first two buyers are mad and talking to their friends. These friends will never be buyers of this morph now. The end is near. Now you have racks and racks of squiggy peach and no buyers. You did make that big money at first, but now you can't give them away even though the squiggy peach is kinda cool.

A better plan would have been to put a more realistic price on it that more people can afford. This seems obvious, but not to everyone. Anyone see the movie about Steve Jobs life when he wanted to sell the Mac cheaper so more could afford it. This is obviously a little different, but you get the idea.

All you need to do is look at the OD. It started out around 5k and the combos are still running strong. Of course the combos are awesome so that helps, but the OD itself is not all that. The desert is another example. It did not start out really high and was staying steady until it became obvious to even the people blinded by the real truth that females were infertile. If these morphs started at 20k they would have crashed fast and scared people away from investing. Let's be honest, we are investing when we buy a new morph. These morphs probably would still seel because they are so nice, but I have seen other nice morphs I like crash because they were priced too high to start.

There is another plan I've never heard anyone talk about. If you have a cool new morph and want the big money first you can tell your buyers they are paying more to be first, but next year you are coming out at a lower price. I realize some will argue this is price fixing, but let's keep it real, it's done all the time in this business. It's done with sunglasses also. Stores can't sell them below a certain number or they will be cut off. Obviously we can't do that, but if this agreement is made nobody is going to be arrested.

One more thing. I am not a fan of FB auctions for bread and butter morphs. I can see dumping those hard to sell animals, but some animals just shouldn't have a world wide low price set on them. Once people see that price they'll always want to pay that price. I have seen this happen many times lately. People have told me a price they have seen and will not pay more.

It really seems like it's only a matter of time. Many of you remember what happened with the mojave. I can see a large breeder with the resources and collection totally tanking prices on his way out the door because he's so fed up. I realize there will never be complete sanity in this hobby/business, but a gal/guy can dream.

well said I think....I don't care who tries to pee in your apple jacks..........I always hated the prices over 10G ....so many animals we/you/they can never own no matter what they do...too costly.....and we all want all colors...all of them....I know I did./...I did it with corns long ago...bought them by the dozen at a time...but then we actually sold 100 animals at a show...now...you may sell 3 and give away 5 cornsnakes....and they are all worth the same to me...one price....balls...so many colors....so many bad deals in the world...you are correct....

good luck...have fun...whoever you is.....!

As far as the morph that went from 50k to less than 1k in 2 years. Obviously this is a little different, but I know everyone and their brother wants that morph in their collection. This morph may have seemed like it crashed overnight, but it has been around for ten years. The fact that everyone has males clearly compounded the problem. The morph was in too many peoples hands to even attempt to control the crash. People panicked. They still are.

People posting youtube vidoes saying how many they are going to produce did not help either. I realize there should be some sort of honesty in this business, but if you're telling people you're going to produce and sell 100 "investment" animals, you're fooling yourself if you don't think that's gonna scare people away from paying top dollar. Smart people know you'll need to dump them later, especially when you have 99 males.

One more thing on your dinkers. Work them. Find out if there is a super. Find out if they produce a white snake in any way. I totally get the fact that you want money now, and it is a little bit of a gamble to wait, but knowing all the answers on some projects is a good thing. The OD has been the exception to the rule, but it's very very hard to try and raise the price after you find out there is a super once you let some go for cheap. The people in for cheap will sell much cheaper. I know this sounds like a contradiction, but I have seen some people trying to sell their new morphs for 1k or less when they have no clue of a super. Clearly their morph is genetic, but they have not put the work in. If that morph pops out some crazy super, they cost themselves thousands.

I do want to make one thing clear on that one main morph that has crashed. At the price they are right now you can't lose. Buy one from someone you trust and you'll make money. Everyone wants one. The project was handled well for years, even if people complained about the secrecy. That "secrecy" is one of the main reasons the project stayed high for years. They were not dumped either. Buy one and make money. Pray for females.

Take videos to show off your new dreamy combos, not your dreamy numbers. Do the same on the forums. Clearly there is no need to help one single rookie(some do) with any of their problems they post about. Just pop in and show off your dreamy combos and you'll do great.

Hopefully you take this info to heart. It was not made to cause trouble. If you're reading this post you most likely love to keep and breed ball pythons. If you'd like to make money off it also, I suggest you listen to what I say.

I don't post often, but when I do I post THE TRUTH.

Since you said "pray for females" I'll play devil's advocate and ask why? If males of the morph are now selling for under$1000 , why would I want to pay say$2000 for a female, that I have to raise up for two full years, then pray that she decides to breed, then pray that she lays a viable clutch, then pray that those eggs hatch, then pray that the odds are kind to me?? The only thing that I can make with a female that I can't make with only the male is the Super which in two years , maybe 3-4, depending how lucky you are in getting that female to breed, what will that be worth?
Using this morph to work into recessive pattern morphs is where the future is with this I.e. Pieds, Clowns, Genetic Stripes etc,not producing females in my opinion. Heck a great affordable project today would be to buy one of those said males, buy a couple of cheap adult genetic stripe girls or even a Pied and go to work. Trying to cash in quick on a quick hit co-Dom project is riskier than taking the longer more circuitous route that is the recessive path. My .02

Just so we're clear, the morph that my comments were in reference to were the Banana / coral Glow

Looks like I'm going to need to take the Doc to school. It's a little late, but better late than never.

You're talking like people are wanting to buy that female first. Very soon EVERYONE will have a male and what they'll want next are ladies. Ladies that produce males that produce mostly ladies. You don't only get a super from a female banana. You get a female making male. That's the only male that will sell for good money soon unless the male maker has some sort of recessive gene also. People will still buy a female of almost every morph for more money. Especially if it produces a super. Go down the list. These females do two important things and smart people are going to want them.

Sorry if I mentioned smart people on a ball python forum. I know how rare they are.
