Bennie... the Dumeril's boa????

dsharkey Dec 19, 2013 01:43 AM

I picked up a dumeril's boa at a pet store a few weeks ago, and need the opinion of somebody who has some confidence in the area. First off, I know, I myself also find pet stores disturbing and rarely allow myself to purchase anything from such places, but I couldn't let the chance of a dum slip past me, so I picked him up.
Considering the poor reputation of pet stores where I am from, I just want to know of some specifics. The more I think about it, the more Bennie looks like a Madagascar Ground Boa. Is there anyway I could get some kind of a specific list of differences or characteristics of the two to assure myself that this is indeed a Dumeril's, and I wasn't miss led? Thanks.

the main difference is the price. Dums are 85-125 dollar snakes... well the pet store price could be as high as 200 as the rip people off. mgb on the other hand are way more pricy.

also, you can just do a google search for both and see the pattern differences. the firse 1/5 of the dorsal pattern on mgbs usually looks "fused" togther, where the dums pattern is more precise.

the mgbs also tent to have a more pointy head and the dums have a rounder snout.

finally, dums and mgb have been bred together in captivity. you might have a mutt on your hands. nothing wrong with that, just might make it hard to figure out what it is.

if you can post a picture, i'll let you know what you have.
