Unusual mouth issue with ratsnake

Mike_K Feb 18, 2014 03:39 PM

I was about to buy a ratsnake from a local pet store today. They've had the snake for awhile and it has always fed fine and had no issues.
Today I noticed two spots of swelling under its top lips, directly underneath its eyes. The rest of the mouth looks perfect. The spots are dark, almost looking like mites or where the substrate has caught up in there. It is unusual because the spots are perfectly lined up under the eye, inside the upper lip. Could it be some kind of duct blockage? Any ideas? The snake is in shed, but appears otherwise healthy and mite free.

Point it out to the pet store. It COULD be the early stages of mouth rot. Research symptoms to decide for your self or post a picture for better identification by others of symptoms you described. If its is indeed MR well, there are a number of negative or less negative ways things could go. Hopefully it is not MR.
