Can someone give me an average breeding weight for a female. Thanks
As far as I know, they can reproduce at 150 to 200 grams, to well over 600 grams. Some folks have some big old hogs. So average would be somewhere in the middle, say almost 400 grams.
I do a lot of field work and wild hogs are much liter for their length, then captives. So a 150gr female hog is a fairly large adult. The heaviest I have seen in nature is aprox 300 grams. Which is half the weight of some of the captives I have seen.
Lastly, weight depends on health and condition. Captive hogs can be overweight, so a 200gr. overweight female, is much smaller then a 200gr. Healthy female. As far as I can tell for westerns, 200grs is the normal average first clutch suggestion. I hope this helps. Best wishes
Thanks, been a long time since I bred hogs and after using weights on the ball pythons just thought it would make it easier.
Hey Terry,
I agree with FR's reply. BTW, good to see another "old timer" hangin' in! I don't know if you remember me, but I met you at an Ohio show in Columbus back in 1991. I was crazy about those albino ruthveni! Take care, Joe
I have heard of western hogs as small as 150 grams breeding successfully, and I have bred 200-215 gram hogs myself. However, I generally use 250 grams as the "target weight." It's not going to hurt to wait until they are 250, and they seem to have fewer complications, and bounce back faster after laying when they are a bit bigger. On an appropriate feeding schedule, you should be able to breed most females on their second spring. My holdbacks from 2013 are between 70 and 90 grams now, and will easily reach 250 before december when I put them down.
Just how I do it.
