Jaguar Question

MattyM Apr 19, 2014 08:56 PM

I am having trouble identifying what makes a Jaguar pattern different from normal. I know it is kinda sad, but I have been looking at pictures of snakes advertised as Jaguar pattern, and they look different, I just can't put my finger on what it is that is different... Anyone able to explain it to me? or show pictures comparing?

There are a few people who claim to have Jags but in reality, you can count on less than one hand the breeders who are working with the actual Jag gene.

I have been working with Jags for a couple of seasons now and there is a huge variability in Jags even from the same clutch. There are low expression, high expression, and all levels of expression in between. The high expression jags are easy to pick out but the low expression ones can be tricky if you do not know exactly what to look for.

Here is a jag with a good expression of the gene with what to look for. in the pattern.

And here are a couple of super cool ones I produced last season.

Awesome! Thank you! Beautiful little guys there! I recently picked up a possibly gravid female het hypo, who locked up with a male hypo Jag. If she is gravid (which I doubt) I will know what to look for in the babies!

Thank you again!

Matty, Are you in the States? If you are, no one here has produced hypo jags. In fact, last season was the first time albino Jags have been produced here in the States and I was the only one who produced them. Where did ya get the female? Who produced the hypo Jag?

Sorry, I meant het Hypo Jag. Produced by Dallas Barber.

It doesn't seem to be true of all jags I've seen others post, but every one I have has a greenish cast to the lateral innerscaler skin. Even my red/tan male has green sides. Kinda neat.

Here are two hold backs:

This 2013 male bred his mom this spring, and will complete my second round of test crosses.

Red/Tan Jag male 2013:

Many seem to have these starburst pattern anomalies on their lateral scales as well. This is a little male the day he hatched from 2013;

This gene is very exciting, and I can't wait to see what it does when re-combined with axanthic, lavender, and sable.
