My first king snake

MidasTheKing May 19, 2014 02:51 PM

Hey all,
I just got my first kingsnake, Midas. I've had him for about a month now and I just had a quick question. I'm currently feeding him on frozen fuzzy mice. His last feeding he ate two fuzzys and still seemed hungry, he was roaming around his feeding tank flicking his tongue and looking for more prey. Does this mean he is ready to be moved up to hoppers? He is about 20 inches long and about 1/2 an inch wide at his widest point. I've attached a picture but he was curled up when I took it. I will post a better one when he wakes up

Congrats on your first king, he's a beauty. They're great snakes to keep and pretty voracious feeders. My kings will usually prowl their tanks in feed mode for 30-60 minutes after they've eaten. After that they'll retire to their warm hides for 2-3 days to digest their meal. Midas definitely looks like he can handle a small hopper. It can't hurt to try. I generally feed my young kings approximately 10-15% of their body weight every 5-7 days. Best wishes with your new addition.

Your king is very nice looking. He can easily eat hoppers. I would say he can even take small adult mice with no trouble.
