Herping for Kings- Ideal Conditions?

Ebby May 22, 2014 01:06 PM

So i've been herping a lot recently and looking mostly for snakes. I was wondering what the ideal conditions would be to find kingsnakes; time, temperature, humidity, moon phases, etc. Any information on the ideal herping scenario for kings would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

At a dealers hotel room and preferably when they are drunk. Great deals to free. The best time is the last night of a herp show. Sometimes this produces like crazy. I prefer the dark of the moon. Also its good to take a hunting partner, if they get drunk, you and score double. Best wishes

I also agree! It's especially good when they are stuck in town, stewing on Sunday night after a weak show. Meet them for dinner or at the Hotel pub, then ask to look at the critters again. They're practically lettin' 'em go at that point to get rid of them. Beer (lots) does help.

If you mean wild herping for kings, what region??

Yes! The region makes a big difference..

I think the best bet for non desert dwelling kings are A/C board lines placed the season before.

Previous suggestions are funny as hell. But for wild kings, you live in the SE, right? Me too. Look for rural dump piles (old carpet, plywood, etc.) and abandoned and dilapidated barns and sheds. Stuff that provides cover. Even better if near farm pond. You can get lucky and find a couple kings under the same board. Or rat snakes. What could be more fun, right?

I actually don't have much experince in the SE.. I am from the West coast.. there are a lot more spp there and herping in the SE just does not interest me much.

I guess I am spoiled.

Board lines really work well in southern CAlif. I have heard of limited success in the Apalachicolas with AC for meansi.. but not much success.

I've only herped kings in TX and NM to date, but what works for me is new moon or cloudy night, low barometric pressure, going before or after rain. for road crusing or walking cuts, thats what I was told to look for as a kid and it's worked so far.

if you want to go walking/ hiking during the day look for dumps, falling down buildings in rural areas, or if you have access to private ranches, looking under old tin that has been sitting forever or under stacks of haybales works well.

i've never placed AC myself, just been lucky enough to stumble upon lots left around by ranchers an farmers who ironically usually hate snakes, but give them plenty of places to live.
