In Maui right now and thought I would share..(off topic but the Chameleon forum is dead).

These things are so cool to find in the wild.

Back in 80-85 I worked with Sean at the zoo and the Chameleons were only in certain pockets in Maui ( Makawao). Today they are everywhere.. thing is most tourists miss them because they are so hard to see.

Those are cool. Are they only found on that one island?

I believe they are found on all the islands now.

I kinda like seeing the little buggers. I think they match this place real well even though they are an introduced species.

I agree. I think they are the only reptiles found there, so to me its a good thing.

Hi Ross, there are lots of different lizard species there, geckos, day geckos, anoles of several kinds. Worm snakes, and tons of mongoose. Lots of introduced bird species too.

Hi Frank, good to know. I think I heard there was nothing there from someone on another forum.

Sea turtles are native. They do bask on land occasionally.

I grabbed onto a small one the other day and it took me for a ride.

It was actualy very unafraid of me because I was able to get a ride 3 different times. Usually they shy away just out of reach.

I also saw a monk seal. I was able to get pictures of it and will post pics of it if this thread is still near the top.

Sounds lie you're having a good time. I'd like to see the monk seal too.
I went to Kauai a long time ago. mainly to surf but I saw sea turtles, geckos and little metallic brown skinks. The sea turtles will hang out outside of the surfers and supposedly if they move inside it means there is a shark out there.

Very cool. Where are those chameleons native to originally?

reako45

Bluerosy Jun 05, 2014 03:09 AM

The chameleons were accidentally introduced back in the 70's due to the pet trade. They were considered an invasive species and could mess up the system. But then again most everything from the rats and cockroaches came over when captain Cook discovered the hawaiian island chain. To the mongooses that were supposed to control the rat population and the cane toads to eleviate the coackroaches were intentionally introduced..Everything takes off here and flourishes.

That is why dept of agriculture makes everyone fill out forms while traveling to Hawaii.

The cameleosn are all over now.. They can be shipped back to the mainland. But are not allowed to be transported to other islands.
