Kings and OT pics (most of my stuff)

AaronBayer Jun 09, 2014 09:54 AM

recently finally got around to using photobucket and everybody loves pics, so I snapped quick cellphone shots of several things will cleaning cages. most animals were carried outside to try and get somewhat accurate colors of them, but it was partly cloudy so some shots are brighter/duller than the animals are in person.

Great Sinaloans! Also, love the Mexican hogs! Did those come from Mike Price?

they came from Travis Dimler. F1s from a pair he caught in the marathon basin.

my stuarts and blanchard milks came from Mike though.

Your TX kennerlyi are nice looking as well. I've got a pair from AZ, and it's amazing how variable their patterns are as well. Had to do a double take cuz I thought they were strange looking Westerns at first.

thanks.

i really like how variable they are as well. i've seen animals from just 60-70 miles apart look totally different... one pair looking like what I have and the other looking pink. they are pretty cool.

So, that is a melanistic splendida, not a nigrita? Ector county, what state?

AaronBayer Jun 09, 2014 04:15 PM

yeah, not a MBK... sorta.

It was found on a farm in Ector county TX (west central TX).

it's hard to know what to call it for now, until i do some breeding trials.

some folks think MBK are splendida population that just exhibits hypermelanism due to the habitat or evolutionary pressures. if that is true, then this would be a MBK/ hypermelanistic splendida from a new locale.

now, melanistic splendida have been found before in various parts of TX and eastern NM but they've always had at least some specks of yellow on the throat and chin. mine is entirely black, so it's leading me to believe/hope it may be a recessive form of melanism like the melanistic thayeri.

either way, some breeding will have to be done to see exactly what is going on with this thing.

it's only been in my care for a short while so i'm hoping to breed it late next year or in 2016. i'll be in africa for prime breeding season next year, so it'll be iffy.

Male Blanchard's Milksnake (got a female or two coming this year.)

Female Miami phase Cornsnake. (this was my 2nd snake that I got when i was around 12 years old and i'm turning 30 today. she was the first baby snake I owned, the first snake to bite me, the first snake i got to breed... lots of sentimental value with the old girl. she's probably produced more babies than any other corn too... most years double and triple clutching from a single pair up and always had huge clutches (14-20) even though she is a tiny little corn). this was her last year to breed though... dropped 23 slugs from a proven male, so I took it as a sign to just let her relax for the rest of her life.

You have a very nice collection Aaron. Those black milks are especially impressive!

thank you.

i like the black milks a lot too. most days they are probably my favorite in the collection. though my argentines give them a run for their money.

Very nice collection Aaron. I love those kings, milks and corns. Can I ask which tubs you use for your colubrids? I've been using tanks but I'm thinking of putting one of my new additions in a tub and was wondering which ones provide the best security.

AaronBayer Jun 09, 2014 08:24 PM

I'm slowly converting everything over to tubs and cages from Boaphile Plastics.

I gave Jeff a shot a few years ago when I ordered a cage for my dumeril's and loved it. So i've just been ordering from him.

now I have 4 snakes still in tanks, but will order another rack/tubs from Boaphile soon.

Boaphile offers every size and style you can imagine so there is something for anything you own.

Great stuff, especially the Grease kings. I've hunted that field a lot and have a trio from there. They are one of my favorite kings. Some people think they're ugly, but you have to go there and find them to really know what they are about.

what do the bellies of your grease kings look like?

the yellow on my male's belly is very light, almost white. much much lighter than the rest of the yellow bands.

My female had a lot or orange on her belly when young (i've seen a few cals and deserts with orange bellies as well), but she has kept a trace amount or orange as she's grown.

rosspadilla Jun 10, 2014 02:15 AM

Wow, that is spot on with mine as well. The male doesn't have a lot of dark pigment in his yellow bands like some do, except for the first yellow band behind his neck. His belly is very light, almost white as well. No trace of yellow in it at all. Its also has more dark pigment than a normal checkered belly, increasing with darkness near its tail. Some have these dark bellies and others don't, same with the Yuma morph, exactly the same. My female also had an orange tint to her belly for a long time. I'm not sure if you can still see it. Its mostly a very light tan almost whitish. Her belly pattern is normal, her head pattern is dark, not as dark as the male's. Her yellow rings are like the males with not a lot of darkness, but one interesting thing is she has developed a brown tint to her yellow scales mostly on the upper dorsal area. Because of that, her bands are less defined now. The male is older and hasn't developed that at all. The other female is mostly normal with a little bit of darkness in the light scales, yellow belly, normal belly pattern, but with a darker than normal head pattern. Males seem to always be the darker (hypermelanistic type) of the two. I've found this same morph is another Los Angeles Co. locale and the males have always been darker in every way from any Long Beach hypermelanistic king I've seen, for some reason.
