sperm retention

Unexpected 2nd clutch or ? My albino hog laid about 12 normal eggs on 5/21 and then 12 more on july 9(all duds), my het albino had 14 normal eggs on 5/21 then 8 more on july 1 (all duds). Eggs were smaller than 1st clutch with both. They never looked gravid nor did I feel for eggs. Totally caught off guard with this. Nothing happened with my albino conda, but she was smaller at 150 grams.

Any opinions appreciated. thanks, mike

Nearly all my females double clutch and I don't reintroduce males. The second clutch is 4 or 5 weeks after the first and is usually smaller.

Thanks for the info. Guess this is normal behaviour for hogs. My pueblans and corns never went a second time unless the male was put back, but they probably were capable of laying more eggs without a male.

Kings and corns can lay a second and third clutch, and be viable with or without copulating. In some cases it can be parthnogenetic reproduction(Gordon Shuette)or not, we were discussing this subject last weekend and so far we do not have a handle on why they sometimes reproduce parthno, and sometimes have infertile. More to learn I guess.

This girl gave me 13 eggs a month on 6/5 and 12 eggs today.
Mine nearly always give me the first clutch 2 months after I take them out of brumation - I put them with the males right away - and give me the second clutch 4-5 weeks after.
This has happened more than 95% of cases, so I am inclined to think this means it is an automatic physiological process rather than her choosing when to allow it to happen. It could relate to the eggs developing in the two separate ducts.
