Whats up with my brooksi?!

Brandon_Marsh37 Jul 29, 2014 03:45 PM

Hey all I've posted before in the pituophis forum but my favorite animals are my getulas cal kings especially as they were my first successful breeding project when I was a teenager about 15 years ago! Anyway I have this male Brooksi about 10 months old now I've had since he was just 11". He's now a beefy 39" and has always been the most laid back animal until about a week ago. He was in his enclosure and outta nowhere just started racing around like somebody was after him. Then the other day I was holding him n he bolted again. Now instead of wrapping up my hands he acts like a baby milk snake. IDK why he's so wired now alluva sudden. I wash my hands between holding snakes and there's nobody else near him. I've never seen a snake go from chill to infinity even ones I caught in the wild as a kid. Has anyone ever had a sudden change like that? Haha should I burn sage over him while speaking in tongues? Dunk him in holy water? This is a snake who teaches kids and seniors in my reptile society and one that I handle alot at home. He eats his furry veggies every week but it just worried me when he had those little mini freak-outs.

It is not normal behavior for a 40" Florida to spazz out like that.

Could be a lot of things. Without more info on husbandry and setup it is hard to tell.

It is a male , right? Are there females nearby?

What temp gradient do you have?

what substrate?

size enclose? Furniture? Humid box?

checked for mites?

Stool looks okay?

A million questions.

the time of year, and mites go together. I would check for that first. Best wishes

Yea. Sorry I should've included some info... He's a male be one yr old next month is 39". He's on aspen in a 20L I actually don't have him in the main snake room he's on a desk kinda away from traffic in our tv room. He's got hides in both sides water on the cooler side. I got 60% humidity and temps right now are 87 hot 79 cool. Mites was my first thought but don't see any and I treat the cage every 6weeks or so with the spray.
Other than that episode the other day he seems ok. He eats and sheds great.
This morning I caught my sisters cat up there and I know he hates that cat so she could've made him nervous. I definitely won't dismiss it there and I do have my eye on him closely!

So we have not had any more freak outs and I moved the enclosure so it was away from where the cat could get close to him. Just to be safe I cleaned his enclosure VERY thoroughly. We also went and saw the vet just to be safe instead of sorry. He was very impressed with him haha but he looked him over and he said he probly got startled but he looks ok. Thank you guys for your input and I have one eye on him still.
