Polycarbonate boxes

markg Aug 30, 2014 10:07 PM

Recently setup these Cambro clear FDA-approved food prep boxes. The full size boxes have floorspace of a 10gal tank, roughly 10 x 20 inches (pic 1), the 1/2 size are about 10 x 10 (pic 2).Very tough polycarbonate material. I had to drill the air holes in the lid using a 1/8 pilot drill then a step drill to size, rather time consuming but looks so nice. I found that the lids can be held on tightly by office binder clips.

Anyone else using these? Working out great so far. No plastic smell at all.

Curious, are those pliable or rigid? I like the way they look better than the sterilite tubs I have.

They are rigid, and quite thick. I have dropped some in the past from about 4 feet up with no breakage (they kind of bounce). Temperature spec'd from below freezing to about 200 deg F I think. Pretty tough. Food safe, so snake safe.

Only downsides I have found:
1. They can scratch if using rocks or sand in the cage.
2. They are quite heavy compared to polypropylene boxes (sterilite, etc)
3. Like glass, they tend to heat up quickly over the heat source, but are cold about 2 inches from the heat source edge. This is the one property that I do not like.
4. Expensive (but last forever)

I built a rack awhile back based on Cambro dimensions. The intent was for neonate GTP's. Unfortunately life changes have left me without the need.

I didn't use the lids but the polycarbonate material the tubs are made from is very durable. Like you said it can be dropped without shattering. It's also Food safe meaning it doesn't absorb any nasties like PVCX or polypropylene (sterlite tubs). As such it's great for our little friends and easy to clean.

Also dishwasher safe if they are small enough to fit.

It's also very clear meaning you can back light or if you use the lids top light and be able to see the animal.

They are rather expensive but are well worth the cost IMO.
