Housing baby hogs?

mingdurga Oct 09, 2014 08:43 AM

Just wondering what the norm is? Rack systems or separate units with belly heat or room temps (Mine is in the high 60's to mid 70's).
Started mine in a vision 28 tub unit, but lost 3 when sliding out the tubs. Not sure if they were crushed trying to climb out or when tub was withdrawn. Newspaper with cork bark hide (flat pieces)and water dish. Switched them all to rubbermaid shoe boxes with snap on lids and room temps.
Had this unit for over 8 years and never lost any hatchlings due to crushing.

Appreciate some input. Thanks.

Sorry for you losses, that sucks. I would think if your room is sixties to seventies, you would need a additional heating. Up to the mid ninties would be good.
I have my hatchlings together at the moment and they are doing great and interacting well. But time will tell.
Could you show pics of the devise that crushed your neonates. That could benefit others who may try the same thing. I cannot even picture how it happened. Best wishes

It's a Vision table top hatchling rack (28 tubs)in use for over 8 years. All my milks have been raised in it with no losses.

Tubs are clear. Painted with artists gesso on outside to make opaque. Heat rope underneath tubs. Gesso washes off with warm water, non toxic.

Wow, what a great idea for making a clear surface opaque. I was going to use a type of contact paper to achieve the same goal, but I like your idea much better. Do you paint it or spray it on? Thanks!

I use 6qt sterilite tubs. I don't think they can get up on the edges...or I have never seen them do it...and I try to make sure they are in before closing the tub. I am so scared of killing a baby by closing the tub too quick, so I am extra careful with that.

For many years I kept empty V-70 tubs ( 10 ) on top of the table top vision rack. This weight made the tubs a little difficult to slide out. Didn't affect my baby milks, but it sure did with the hogs. Removed all the heavy tubs and the visions slide out much easier now. I still peek inside when removing tubs slightly just to make sure though. Hope this solves the problem.
