Baby hypo brooks not eating

bakeaway Nov 07, 2014 09:33 AM

I have gotten most of my snakes as juveniles or sub adults. So this is my first time with a true baby.He had eaten before he was shipped a few times. Now he is not eating at all. Which is rare for a brooks. Temps are right, etc. Any ideas?
I am use to just dropping in the food to all my other snakes and them eating.

I'm having the same problem with a young hypo. All my others, including two young ones like the hypo, eat everything in sight. I drop f/t in their enclosure and it's pounced on; all except the hypo. She will eat a f/t fuzzy very occasionally, but it's very rare. She'll gladly eat live, every time. She'll usually take the f/t once between sheds, I'll keep trying. I've been holding off on the live since I don't want to get into that scene and will continue with the f/t. I'm thinking about brumating her with all my adults in the next few weeks. Hopefully she'll come out of it real hungry and resolve the problem. This has worked before, so I'm going to try it again. Good luck with your hypo, I'm sure it will work out.

Many years ago I got 3 Floridas delivered to me in the Fall - 2 subadults and one juvie. The juvie would not feed for anything. I ended up cooling all three soon after until about mid Feb. After that, the juvie became a voracious feeder.

I am sure I am not the only one who has experienced something like this with a Florida king. I live in the West where Fall can have somewhat low humidity at times. I notice that with some kingsnakes I have had, low humidity in Fall coincides with reduced desire to feed. Not sure if it cause and effect, I just notice that it happens at the same time.

I recently got into hognose. My hoggs eat more often in Fall than any other time (thus far).

May I add a thought. In nature, snakes and in particularly neonates, move from summer areas to fall areas as the temps drop. If they cannot, they stop feeding and go down. So, they extend their feeding season by moving to more suitable areas.
In captivity they are trapped. So they have no choice, but to stop feeding.
I have been at this for a long time and I stopped taking temps a long time ago. If I want them to keep feeding, I adjust the temps to support that. If I do not, I will allow them to cool. The reality is, snakes work by mass temps, not air temps. In the fall as the outside temps drop, the mass temps also drop. While air temps may be the same, the actual snakes temps are not, as they are touching hard surfaces(the mass)

Heres the deal, You can do nothing and hope it eats, or you can attempt to adjust your husbandry. Its up to you.
Everybody but you, has no idea what going on with your animals. So its your call. As the seasons change, conditions change. Saying what you said, is irrelevant to your snake not eating, as it's still not eating.
When trying to fix anything, use proper troubleshooting procedures, which starts with, the simplist things first. This time of year, the two most common changes are, temps and humidity. Fla. Kings are very sensitive to dehydration. The rest is up to you. I wish you the best of luck
