old skool heat cable

bluerosy Feb 23, 2015 06:29 PM

Anyone know where to buy the heat cable ( Braided Heat Tape) that we used to use for old routered melamime racks?

The ones without the built in thermostat?

Look for Easy Heat HB series, if it is still sold. No plug, no thermostat. Here is a link:

There is also self-regulating cable, like this:

Hard to find the good old non-thermostat cables. And the way they mold-in the thermostats on the thermostat-controlled models makes it really tough to cut out the thermostat, though I have done it.

Anything sold in a store will be overpriced and will have a thermostat. For example, I used to be able to go to hardware stores in Big Bear and find Wrap-On heat cable with no t-stat for a relatively good price. No more, all t-stat controlled now and pricey.

Regarding Flexwatt, Reptile Basics sells the new THG heat tape. It has a more appropriate watts/ft rating and is thicker, meaning it lays flat and will not get super hot. Nice stuff.

yesss!

It was the Easy Heat without the thermostat I was looking for! That was the same site I purchased from years ago but lost the link.

Thanks so much! Much appreciated!!!!!

You can buy it on a roll at a plumbing or electrical supply house. 3M makes it. In fact you can order it on line at Grainger. I use a 3-5 watt per foot cable. I have been using it for 10 years on some of my set ups with zero issues.

Okay thanks! I will check into that to see if it is cheaper..
