how is it going with your females. Getting any activity yet?
I decided to cool. They are at 56-58 degrees right now. I introduced males with females and cooled them together. Before they got to the bottom temps I observes a lot of courting and 5 copulations. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
How's it going for you mr frank. Hopefully well
Heck if I know, hahahahahaha, four out of six copulated right away, and are all doing well. One may be a little small/young the other not sure about.
As you can tell, hognose are goofy snakes. Their reproductive process is indeed odd.
I love your experiment and hope to keep hearing about it. The cold this time of year in captivity is a wonderful choice.
I say that because its how they work in nature. Most other species, seek heat in early spring to jump start the reproductive process. I have millions of pics and videos of other reptiles doing that. Hognose, they stay down in the cold dirt, until AFTER they lay eggs.
Also when I first came here, I asked a lot of questions and a number of people reported having their hogs lay eggs in hibernation. So yes, your work is very interesting. I thank you for having the fortitude to give it a go.
More on my snakes, As you know, I hatched some axanthic Mexicans last year. I raised them together. Which you may understand is a pain in the behind. Messy snakes. But all went well and all got along and fed well etc. Recently I separated them as they needed more space. I raised them together, as that is how snakes learn, friend or foe, in nature. The first few months are what is important, normally from that point on, they imprint of the scent and accept these individuals well. and without outstanding need. Anyway, I did that, and now they are separated, I will put then in the same cage from time to time. The male is becoming an outstanding looking snake. Super lite. I need to post some pics.
What is funny is, when they were all in the same cage, I would toss in a handful of pinks, and each one normally ate the same amount. Not at first, but later as they learned the relationship. One of the hatchlings a one small kink(bump) now it has a bunch. You cannot see them, but you can feel them. That individual is kicking arse and doing well. Its out growing the others(by a little)
