confused newbie

mjoy07 Jun 18, 2011 04:27 AM

Hi guys!

I'm a newbie and I'm seeking for any opinions.

I have a 5 month old Belgian Malinois.
He is easy to train but if there is someone else around
he is easily got destructed.
what is the right age for a dog to begin his training?

Thanks.

It takes gentle, careful training time plus the dog getting more mature. At the link below, the Canine Behavior Series, I have a LOT of articles I've written on aspects of dog behavior and a lot of training. Read the one on Attention first. And there are lots of others that will help you, too!

I had Belgian Tervuren for about 20 years. Now I have a Standard Poodle--my assistance/service dog for mobility disabilities. The Belgians are very different from a Standard Poodle! Both very smart. The Poodle may be smarter than humans!

Thanks KD!

It's a big help for me.
I guess I need more patience on teaching him right.
He is just young anyway.
I have many things I want to teach him.

Thanks a lot for the inputs :0

slow is the best but also the younger the pup the better in my experience. They dont have many bad habits.

The Belgian Malinois is easily trained, but must receive proper training from a very young age, probably from 8th month onwards. This breed of dogs are very energetic, agile, protective, intelligent. This honorable breed is often used as a working dog for protection, detection of narcotics, bombs, and police work.

Thanks Mike!

yeah, they are a working dog, that's why sometimes they became aggressive, I guess I need a lot of patience. I just want him to learn a lot of things.

What dog(s) do you have Mike?

5 month dogs are already trainable. I suggest you start early because as they age, training gets a little harder.
