More Nosework fun

perrtl Jul 19, 2011 03:46 PM

As I know some of you are not active on FB and have asked that we remember to post here too I thought I’d share a little weekend fun that we had.

Our big thrill this weekend is that both Kahla (8.5 yrs old) and Sabia (10 months old) passed their birch odor recognition test. Yee ha!!

Both are in the beginning of training for Nosework so we weren’t sure how it would go, and Alex has only been handling Kahla for 4 classes (still transitioning from handling NW rockstar Zelda). We are SO tickled with both girls pulling this off! They really LOVE playing this game – “find it.”

The test was in a huge, open and echo-y room. Puppy was distracted by everything, the judge, the steward, the videographer, the judge’s assistant, the wall, the floor… all in true puppy fashion. But after about 20 seconds at the start line she focused on the boxes and wanted to go to work. She started down the row of boxes in front of her, checking the first four boxes but then quickly cutting over to the other line to the 5th box in that row. She then spent quite a bit of time checking between the four boxes on the ends of both rows and getting stuck on a crack in the floor. The scent was traveling through the crack in the concrete! She finally went to one of the boxes and started pushing it across the floor, “ALERT!” and everyone in the room burst out cheering. How fun! 1 minute 29 seconds.

You enter one side of the room and exit on the other, after we cleared the room and the steward reset, Alex and Kahla entered for their turn. Kahla apparently pushed each box a bit (playing with them, all 12 boxes… silly goose!) and then went back to the one with odor and started shoving it across the room. Alex correctly called “Alert” in 58 seconds, and again to the room bursting out in cheer.

Maybe I should mention that those in the room know us and were likely holding their breath until we called Alert. The steward was our trainer (Shelley Smith), the videographer another good Nosework friend, and the judge, Ron Gaunt, a master detection dog trainer and founder of this sport for pet dogs, has seen us with Zelda and our RR Dante’ at a few events and workshops held by Shelley.
I have to say, this is ONE FUN SPORT!

Saturday a friend invited me to attend a dog park fundraiser event where she would be talking about lure coursing and have practice runs. One of the park folks brought a speed gun and Kahla (my veteran, 8.5 year “old” dog) clocked the highest speed on the very short 115 ft run – 38 MPH. Yikes!!

Thanks for posting about the fun with nosework. I'd sure like to find someplace to try that out. I think all of mine would love it and it seems like a perfect hot-weather, indoor substitute for laying around the house being bored. I got them have interactive dog toys but they figured them out and lost interest.

No problem Sam! A friend of mine in Glendale is offering the class - I've helped her with a couple and it is fun! Here's a link to her webpage:

Give me a call or an email if you need more details! I want to get Rory into it...but need to find the time...

I bet your kids would love it! Even Journey!!

Thanks for the information Shauna. I'll look into it right away. And I know Journey would love it. MeToo, my primo hunter and scent trailer on walks, would be a natural.

Maybe Bill and Cynthia would be interested.

Good for you. I went to see Bill a couple weeks ago while I was over in town. I think he needs something more to do. LOL

I just approved an ASFA Regional Trial for the weekend of November 5-6. Hope you can come. Wow, we'd have MeToo, Corsair, Rory and Io. Pretty good potential entry for this area. I am supplying a really nice BIF award (if the clubs accept it) so there's some incentive to put it on your schedule. I'm pretty sure it will be in Black Canyon City again.

I haven't done ASFA yet -- but maybe I'll have to give that a try! I'll check the calendar and make sure I'm in town that weekend...if so, count us in!

I;ll make sure you get the premium and entry forms. They should be on the DFB website but I have noticed it isn't kept consistently up to date.

Checked out Kim's nose work offerings. Looks like no summer classes but I will call her later today. Have you trained with her? What are the training sites like?

Sorry to have hijacked this thread everyone - Sam, I can't seem to find your email address...can you send it to me when you get a chance?

I've worked with Kim - she does a lot of electronic collar training, which isn't my first choice of training methods, but I think she's a decent trainer overall. However, for the NoseWork classes it's ALL positive training...no e-collars for that!

I've been to her house - actually even taught a couple classes there...she has a nice sized extra garage that she's having a/c installed in for some of the beginning classes, she was teaching at the indoor training facility over in Paradise Valley for a while (Arizona Dog Sports) - not sure if she'll be going back over there or not. As the classes advance, I know that she'll sometimes train at local parks and at a local chiropractor's office.

Maybe in the fall I can find some time to join you in a class (and Bill & Cynthia too!) -- it would be fun to have all of the Pharaohs together in a class!

Shauna: Spoke to Kim today. She asked me to register via internet and classes will start sometime in August. Garage is almost done - just needs final inspection and sign off.

She also said she was keeping her classes local which is best for me. East valley is too far to drive a couple times a week. Takes more than an hour from here. Glendale is doable. Thirty minutes and little traffic until Bell Rd.

We'll have to make that all PH class happen, should be good for a laugh if nothing else.

Sam - It would be awesome! I love, love, love doing nosework with Rooney and Glory. They are sooo happy and really work hard. Rooney has his first title and is doing some advanced stuff in class - he never gives up and keeps working until he finds the hide. You are going to have a ball!

Sam, try it!
I'm now 4 dogs in, 3 PH girls and 1 RR boy. These dogs love it as it fits their personalities, it's all about them and the answer to "what's in it for them?" is easy, rewards! I think that's why this is so successful, it meets their style.

We definitely will look into it. I think it's well suited for the PH "what's in it for me" attitude. If it's fun mine will do it and the treat factor will just be icing on the cake.

Tabitha, it sounds like great fun! Congrats with your veteran and your 10 month old. Wow, I'm impressed the puppy could do that - it must be fun for the dogs, too! Thanks for the discription of the event.
