Lung Infection

Mahlee Jul 20, 2011 11:34 AM

My elderly spaniel has developed a serious lung infection. The vet says her prognosis is not good. Mucous was removed from her left lung and she is now breathing OK but the vet fears the mucous will return. She had a very high white blood cell count and has been prescribed Bactryl and Flagyl. My question is if you think Astragalus might help her fight this infection and if so what dosage for 27 lb dog and do you know of anything that might help prevent more mucous from forming in the lung.

Astragalus may be of help, but I would also consider echinacea, IgG, and colostrum. As far as the mucous in the lungs is concerned, it is likely due to some irritation, and will be easier to remove by decreasing inflammation in the lungs and opening the air passages. Ephedra, while very difficult to find, would likely be helpful in this situation.

Thanks so much for your response. Unfortunately we had to put our pet down because her condition deteriorated quickly and she was suffering with very labored breathing. I will certainly remember your advice if we are ever faced with similar difficult circumstances. Your kindness in responding so quickly and your concern for the welfare of animals and people alike is truly admirable. Thanks once again on behalf of our family and our beloved dog, Savannah. May God bless.
