AKC Needs Your Help: Military Breed Bans

MojavePHs Jul 25, 2011 11:56 AM

The Doberman Pinsccher Club of America sent out this email today, and I forwarding in case any of you may have a story to share. Although the Pharaoh Hound is not a banned breed, you never know what the future may hold...

PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST:

The American Kennel Club is seeking our help in identifying stories regarding real people impacted by the military's policy banning Doberman Pinschers and other breeds. If you have a story, or know someone who does, please email shani.stjohn@mslgroup.com as quickly as you can. In your email, please let us know where you are located (city, state).

AND I guess I need to double check before I post...

Pinscher NOT Pinsccher!

My Doberman Casey would forgive me for hurrying, but I am not so sure about my first Dobe, Duchess. She was a little more critical!

PS I should also have added a story of my own. I have a friend married to a Marine. Her Doberman has been used by her husband's unit for S&R exercises in the past; however, she was recently informed that the dog would no longer be able to live on base. BUT...they still want to use him for training!

When will the "powers that be" understand that it is not the breed but the people that are the problem? I worked in a veterinary clinic years ago and only encounterd one Dobi that was a problem. Once we met the owner (the dog was brought in by his daughter) we understood why. I never met a bad Pit Bull but have encountered some nasty Poodles. In every case it was owners that didn't understand their dogs needs. Any breed can be a good companion and social pet just as any breed can become mean and unruly with improper care.
