There is something seriously wrong with

Lisha Jul 31, 2012 09:46 AM

The (supposed) bacterial infection flared up again - so she got a prednisone shot a 2 weeks ago followed by 5mg pills and a stronger longer course of antibiotics. Whether or not this is related to what is happening now I don't know. But....

She has been out of sort for a bit I've just blamed it on the kitchen construction - any kind of change sends both dogs fro a loop - and add in an air compressor and nail gun and we have a day full of walks and bones in big bed with the ac and TV blaring! They hate the construction. Understandable.

So she didn't want to go upstairs last night and wouldn't jump up on the couch at all - didn't even think of that until I saw her now. I went to put the dogs out this morning and she screamed - that awful high pitched Shiba scream - and wouldn't move. She was shaking like a leaf from head to toe. So I let her walk down the street on her own and pee on the corner - her tail was tucked waaaay between her legs, she spine is all curved up so she was a 1/2 circle of a dog and her back legs were very markedly going one in front of the other like she was walking a tight rope.

We have a vet appointment a 3 please, please think kind things for my baby girl, I am so worried.

Lisha will be keeping a good thought for Avari. Please keep us updated when you can. It's not much help and I can't remember the circumstances as it was well before Beni's eye problems but he went through something similar I would guess about 6 or 7 years ago. I don't think my vet ever did find a cause. I remember a round of anti-inflammatories and some quiet time and then all seemed well. Sorry... I wish I could remember all of the details... they may even be here somewhere in the archives.

Kind thoughts and prayers coming your way. I hope you got comforting answers from your vet, and Avari will be feeling better quickly.

Thanks guys - the vet said most likely it is degenerative disk disease, she is pretty much on bed rest - carry her and baby her - he re-upped the pred. that we were starting to ween her off of due to some weird skin issue that no one can figure out.

I talked to her vet a little while ago and we are going to keep her on 2 5mg pills a day and talk again Tuesday.

He broke the news to me today that I don't have any young pets anymore - that they are all seniors. Oh and Niko has cataracts - he said they were just starting but that his days of night driving are over. lol

Lisha, I'm glad it's something that TLC and medication will help. I hope she'll be feeling much better really quickly, and am sure she's going to get lots and lots of care and attention.

Tell Niko that even if he can't drive, he can still be a Night Rider!!

I am sorry to read this news about Avari. Hopefully the meds help her be more comfortable and she can be happy again. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

It's heartbreaking that our pups are growing old. I've been reading this forum since before I got Artemis--and she's 9 1/2 already. Hugs to sweet Avari.

Sorry I never came back! darn life keeping me so busy these days!

Avari's back is okay - whatever she did to it the prednisone fixed and she has been fine. Except the itching!!! She has been battling this skin condition for so long and no one seems to have any idea what it is - nothing shows up in the skin scrapings, her undercoat is gone, she feels greasy and yucky, and she itches constantly!

So here's the run down
She is being bathed as needed (well not really because that would be daily that she feels greasy and smelly - like a dog not like yeast) in pyoben

grain free diet

no changes in the house as far as detergent etc.

No bacteria found in skin scrape - but still did 2 courses of antibiotics

Have been using tea tree oil on her (no help)

Nothing seems to help but the prednisone - she is good for a couple weeks after it - then she starts scratching again.

Any ideas? Thyroid? Suddenly developed allergy?

Poor Avari. It must be terribly frustrating not to know what's causing her problems. No advice here--just best wishes.
