Heading to Cornell with Kaia on Thursday

kiko63 Aug 12, 2012 06:29 PM

Hello All
I havent been here in a long time. I acually had a hard time trying to find the forum. They always seem to be changing things around.
I am taking Kaia to see a neurologist at Cornell on Thursday to have them check out this Lumbar Sacral Instability thing that he may have. The vets are not sure that this is his problem. He has been on gabapentin for the last 3 months and tramadol and i still dont seem to have my old Kaia back. It is very heart breaking to see him not his usual self. He is on a perscription diet for his urine crystals which seem to be helping. He went from many crystals to a few on the last urinalysis check. I dont like to feed him this stuff but if it is helping, then i guess we will continue it. He seems to keep getting a rash on his belly that just wont seem to go away. My luck it is probably from the food he is eating. I guess i will have the doctors check that out too.
The other 2 have been doing ok. Kona is starting to show his age. He will be 11 in October. He is slower moving and you can tell his legs are bugging him. I give him sea mobility daily and I have him on the reduced fat core diet with Kiko that seems to be helping. Kiko isnt showing her age as much as Kona though. She still seems to have quite a bit of energy in her. She has a bum knee that bothers her if she gets too rambuntious. I will try to post some pictures of them soon, if I can figure it out again. Ive missed being on this forum with everyone. Maybe now that I found it again I will bookmak this page so I can find it easier.
Will try to keep in touch on the boards.

Give hugs to all three of your crew. I too had trouble finding this place again and the bookmark has helped. Hopefully they do not change it for a while.
I hope they find an easy fix for Kaia's issues. It is terrible when they are not feeling well and you have no clues how to fix them.
Good luck figuring out how to post pictures. I have not been able to get my photos to upload.

Hi Joanne... good to see you again. Hopefully the specialists at Cornell can get to the root of what is ailing Kaia. Let us know what they may find out. I wonder who else may be looking for this place since they changed from the PetHobbyist to ConnectedbyPets... I'm sure there is a handful. Anyways good luck to Kaia... say hello to Dave and give Kona and Kiko a scratch behind the ears!

Well I went to Cornell today with Kaia and had a good visit. X-rays were done and it looks like kaia may have chronic disk disease. He was put on new meds and I have to keep a shiba quiet and keep from running around for 4-6 weeks. That will be fun. No stairs and jumping on furniture which he doesn't do anyway so that's easy. They say I may have to keep him crated or in a small room. I guess we will see what happens. Time will tell. If he gets better, great. If not, an MRI may be needed and possible surgery. Not looking forward to having to do that. Guess we will see what happens. Throw us some shiba thoughts and prayers!!

Joanne I guess there could have been worse news but at least there is something to go on now. The 4-6 weeks downtime should be prove interesting. I'll be going through that same time period with Toshi and then for a couple of months. Keep us updated on Kaia's condition now that you've found us again!

I hope Kaia is OK. I agree that the forum is difficult to find...
