Klebsiella pneumonia in Dachsund

mecula1 Oct 01, 2012 05:04 PM

Hello,
I have a 9 year old Dachshund that has a persistent case of Klebsiella pneumoniae. She has been dealing with it for about 3 years now. She was on 2 - 30 day doses of Baytril upon diagnosis. Following that, she has been on Cefpodoxime for the better part of those 3 years. Upon instruction, there have been a few periods where we didn't give her medications to see how she did (prior to testing). We just had her tested again and her test results that came back were not very encouraging.

I have the utmost faith in my Veterinarian but I just figured I would see if there was anything else that we should be doing or trying. I want the best for her and would be willing to try anything. Are there any holistic avenues that would be worth trying? Immune system boosting vitamin formulas (echinacea, vitmain c, etc.)?

She also has E-coli which is puzzling.

She is very well taken care of and is quite healthy. The only obvious sign is an odor from her nose - she has plenty of energy. She is not around strange dogs, gets Blue Buffalo dog food, teeth brushed weekly, weekly baths, etc. But she suffers from immunodeficiency.

Is there anything else that can be tried?

Do you mean that she has an E. coli pneumonia in addition to the Klebsiella pneumonia? Other than a bad odor from the nose, what symptoms do you see? You might try colloidal silver to eliminate the bacteria, but you should augment her immune system as well.

Hello, sorry for the late response! She has an Escherichia coli (E-Coli) infection. Aside from the smell, there really are no symptoms. Occasionally she gets a runny nose but other than that...not much.

We are most concerned with the Klebsiella. Everything says that it's not something you want to let get out of control. She has been on meds and seemingly doing well, but both the E-Coli and Klebsiella are still present.

I'm hesitant to give her C. Silver. I was thinking more along the lines of probiotics, enzymes, echinacea, etc. I know everyone has their opinions about Colloidal Silver but based on my reading I'm going to stay away from it. One specialist that we took her to here in town gave her a Chemotherapy drug by accident. She spent a week in the hospital and almost died - she had near fatal liver and kidney numbers. Point being is I don't want to stress her liver, or kidneys with anything.

Thanks again.

Give her d-mannose, 1/4 tsp in her food twice a day. I would also try giving a berberine herb; oregon grape, berberis, or golden seal. I can't recommend any homeopathic remedy without knowing more about the dog but you can start with the above.
