Happy Birthday Beni!

Shboom Feb 02, 2013 02:50 PM

Today will be Beni's 15th birthday! It's hard to believe I will have had Beni for 10 years this coming July. As most know the last 7 years have been somewhat rough ones as I continue to battle the glaucoma that had been diagnosed in September 2006. For all intents Beni cannot see although the doctors at Cornell still are of the opinion that he can distinguish between bright sun and shadow. No matter how dark his sight may be it has done nothing to dim the sweet temperment that has made him a fan favorite of everyone at Cornell. In spite of it all I have never once regretted my decision to adopt Beni after Valerie Whitely had passed away. Still though it's always on my mind that this Veteran Champion of the Ring shows more and more the signs of a long lived dog and I can only hope I have him for years to come.

A very happy Birthday to Beni! 15 YEARS OLD is a great age to be! I remember when you first wrote about getting Beni. He and you are both Champions in my eyes.

Hi Chelle! Good to see you stopping by. How are things going with Katsu?

Puppies are hard! It's been a LONG time since we have had a puppy in the house. Don't get me wrong, Katsu is actually a very good puppy. I am just not very good with puppy brains. I am more used to mature adult brains so I expect too much at times and that does not work with Katsu's personality. Thankfully, I am adaptable.
I have never taken a puppy through foundation agility before. So, some of what I am dealing with is very new to me. Also, I will admit that my tolerance for JQP in classes is wearing thin. I know that makes me seem like a snob. It's not really the reason it is a problem for me. It's mostly that my puppy gets bored easily and we already have many of the skills taught in beginner classes. So, to keep her engaged and happy, we end up skipping class and go to a pet store and work there instead on our own for about 15 minutes and then just play together. She's not a serious dog like my others have been, so play is very important for her. Playing games with me in strange places has been a focus of ours instead of other more formal skills. We are building our relationship first. The rest will come later. Not sure what form that will be. Many have tried to convince me to lure course with her. She would love it, but it's not really the team sport I am used to.
So, we are at the start of a journey once again. What I thought I knew, I find out I never really knew, it just worked for a different dog. Katsu's path will be what she needs it to be. There is a national agility event in my area next year that many are trying to get ready for. She will not be participating.

Beni is a sweetie--your velcro dog. Your love and care for him comes through all the time. I'm so happy you two have one another.
