Vaccinations and Deworming for Puppy

TeamGenji Apr 05, 2013 12:51 PM

Hi Dr. Tobin,

We got ourselves a new puppy, he's 9 weeks old.

These are the things he has received at the breeder :

- 3 dewormings with Strongid.

- Bordtella

- Fort Dodge Duramune Max 5 Puppy shot (Canine corona virus, Distemper, Adenovirus Type2, Para influenza, Parvo virus)

I was told that the puppy should be vaccinated again in 3-4 weeks. Not that I don't trust the breeder, I just don't want to over vaccinate the puppy. I'm aware about rabies shot, so I guess my question is what he should receive next.

Thank you.

If the puppy got the distemper vaccination before 8 weeks of age, he may not be protected. If that is the case, keep him from contact with other dogs until he is 12 weeks old, vaccinate him one time with DHLPP, and he should be set for life with that vaccine. If you have any doubts, you can run a titer for Distemper and Parvo at 6 months. He should then get no other shots other than rabies ever again, and for that use a 3 year vaccine.
