black moor goldfish w/ swollen eye

blueeyez485 Mar 14, 2005 12:17 PM

i have had a black moor goldfish for over a year now, for the past month or two its one eye has been significantly larger than the other, i tried treating the water with a medicine that another site recommended by that hasnt helped. it looks like there could have been a scratch on the area right near the eye. any idea what is causing this problem or what i can do to fix it?

i was also wondering how to determine the sex of these fish?

if you are really sure its an injury and not disease then keeping the fish in really clean water with some salt added should aid its recovery. you could try salting to .1% which is 1 level teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon and then again in 12 hours time to get to a .2% solution. This should hopefully aid the fishes recovery.
if its a disease then we would need to know the size of tank, filtration, tank mates, cleaning routine and test results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph.

im not sure whether its an injury or disease. he is in a 2.5 gallon tank by himself with a filtration system. i clean the tank once a week.

I also have a black moor with popeye on one eye. I've treated him with Melafix, anti-parasite meds and salt and he has shown no recovery. How large is your moor because a 2.5 gallon is pretty small for a fish unless I guess it is still a baby. You should probably think about upgrading, toxic chemicals like ammonia can build up quickly in such small tanks without you noticing. I would suggest a 10 gallon for a moor, he would be more comfortable.

He is only about an inch and a 1/2 to 2 inches long. He seems to still have enough room in this tank.

Also as blackmoors grow eyes being uneven in size arent that uncommon and you should find that as he gets bigger the eye will sort itself out as far as growth goes.
