Injured Goldfish

katieol Mar 29, 2005 10:33 PM

I have 2 goldfish (had them for 2 years)--they are in a small pond in the spring/summer/fall and a 32 gallon tank during the winter. Some time last night some tank decor fell over and must have injured one of the fish. I noticed the tipped over decor this morning and it appeared that my fish had a small swelling on his side. It was a small raised bump this morning, but tonight it has white lines around the scales and seems more swollen. Can I treat him--if so, how?? He's a great fish, swims to the surface to be fed--very cool looking calico. He's always been healthy other than a deformed fin (I got him that way). Any help you can give me would be appreciated! I took some pictures but haven't had time to figure out how to post them--but I can e-mail them to people if you think it'll help! Thanks for any help or advise--I'd hate to lose this guy!

it sounds like he has columnaris but the lump could be a boil and may eventually erupt. you will need to do more in the way of water changes and get meds to treat this. its a bacterial infection so ask at your pet store what they have for it.
I would also salt the water to .2%, which is 1 level teaspoon per gallon with aquarium salt and then 12 hours later add another teaspoon per gallon to get the .2%.
